Chapter Nineteen

VIOLET

The house smells different upstairs, a fresh clean scent from the plush carpet beneath my booted feet and a strong smell of cleaning products—pine and a horrific fake rose.

Couples crowd the stairs and hallway, helpfully paying little attention to my presence. I’m instantly aware which room is the bathroom as that door seems the most popular to loiter by, and I’m surprised by how many others are open. I’d hoped one might be a study, but that’s too much to wish for. Besides, I’ve downstairs rooms to check too.

Several bedrooms later, I enter the last, again frustrated that the room isn't Sawyer’s study. Definitely the master—the thick-carpeted room could fit two of the other bedrooms inside and the open plan wardrobe could house a small family. I turn my head to the ensuite where I spy plush pink towels that match the carpets draped over the edge of a jacuzzi.

Kai's parents’ room?

I'm about to turn away when I sense something. Magic. But where?

If Kai’s father doesn’t like witches entering his home, is he aware there’s something magical in his bedroom? I close my eyes and focus, but the energy is faint. Coming from close to the cushion covered bed?

“Whatcha doing in here?” asks a male voice from behind.

“She’s waiting for someone,” says a second.

Pissed at the interruption, I snap my eyes open and turn. Two bulky human guys with buzz cuts, one with a beer bottle in his hand and the other beside him, arms crossed, stand in the doorway.

Wesley’s friends.

I sigh inwardly. I’ve avoided the majority of students connected to Wesley since his murder and hoped to maintain that situation. The pair need to leave if I’m to continue my search because I swear there’s something close by. Mind control the idiots away from me?

As I reach out with my magic, one steps closer in an attempt to intimidate me with his muscular frame, and I throw a spell at him. The energy bounces back. What?

I’m aware of the second guy moving to stand beside me and I hold the first one’s gaze. Are they completely stupid?

“You killed Wes,” says the guy facing me.

“I’d advise you to move,” I say evenly. Why can’t I touch this one’s mind? The barrier my magic hit remind hard and black.

“Why? You gonna hurt me?” Beer on his breath turns my stomach as he’s in my face. “Go on. We saw what you can do when you attacked the shifters. That what you did to Wes?”

The magic sparks in my veins, automatically pulled to the surface by a threat, however pathetic. The guy behind me stands close enough to smell his cheap cologne.

Far too close.

“Yeah. Show us how you deal with people you don’t like, Blackwood.” The breath of the guy behind ruffles my hair and fires up that magic further, and I mentally shove him backwards. Hard. The guy thuds as he hits the wall, but a moment later he’s back behind me. “You can do better than that.”

No. Every Blackwood
